The Sugar-White Beaches of Destin, Florida – A Gulf Paradise
The Emerald Coast city of Destin, Florida is famous for its stunning white beaches, emerald-colored waters, and world-famous fishing. Nestled against the Gulf of Mexico in northwest Florida, Destin is truly famous for its fishing. In fact, it is nicknamed the “world’s luckiest fishing village” which may be highly appealing given the frustration fishing can sometimes deliver.
The 100 Fathom curve comes closer to Destin than any other spot in Florida providing the speediest deep-water access on the Gulf. What can you expect to catch? Amberjack, Red Snapper, Grouper, Speckled Trout, Cobia, Red Fish (drum), Flounder, Pompano, Mahi-Mahi, King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Sheepshead, Triggerfish, Ladyfish, an occasional Tarpon, Blue Marlin, and Billfish of all varieties.
The highlight of the fishing year is the annual Destin Fishing Rodeo running from October 1 through October 31 where anyone can compete in over 30 different categories for more than $100,000.00 in prizes.
Visitors can charter fishing vessels from the harbor, or launch their own boats, and there are 12 beach access points in the city. Among the access points is Henderson Beach State Recreation Area. A portion of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, the Okaloosa Day Use Area, is just across East Pass on Santa Rosa Island.
The sand on Destin’s beaches is some of the whitest and finest in the world. Coming from the Appalachian Mountains, and is made of finely ground quartz crystal giving it the appearance of finely ground sugar.
Near Destin are other popular tourist destinations including Sandestin, Florida, located to the east and is a popular golf and beach resort.
